Virtual Assistants Must Have A Website!
It's more important than ever for virtual assistants to have a web presence. This means an online Resume Profile and a Website . We've made it easy for you to have both so that you can have the best chance possible to land a virtual assistant job or project.
If you are a VOT Registered Member then you should already have your Resume Profile set up and live in our Virtual Assistant Directory so that employers can find and contact you. (After you Register, go to My Account to create your resume.)
Since many of our employers are looking to hire virtual assistants to work on a freelance basis for short term projects, they want to see more than just a traditional resume before they select a candidate. As a result, those VAs with a strong and Professional Website are usually hired first because they can showcase their skills and abilities while also proving that they are capable of working in an Internet based environment.

How it works
Our award-winning SiteBuilder website tool was designed to make creating a website as simple as using a word processor. Simply by dragging, dropping, pointing, and clicking you can add text, images, and other content to your site easily without any programming knowledge at all.
1. First, you will need to Sign Up for your website.
2. Next you will Select a Design from the gallery. You can choose any design that best fits your preferences. We suggest that you stick with something professional and simple. Employers will be more interested in the content on your website then the look of the design.
3. Create Your Homepage and Sub Pages. Your home page should offer summarized but eye-catching content that will make the employer want to read more. You will also want to include your contact details (do NOT use your home address and phone number!!) Instead, you must list your Business Voicemail number, your Online Fax Number and your email address. Additionally, you may want to include links to your Facebook, Twitter and/or LinkedIn profiles. And - most important -remember to also include a link to your VOT Resume Profile! Many successful virtual assistants also like to include a picture of themselves on their homepage.
Next you will create your Sub Pages. You are free to name any pages on your website that you want but we suggest that you stick to information that will specifically help you land a job as a virtual assistant. With this in mind, we suggest that you consider adding some of the following pages:
-- About Me Page. This is a great place to describe yourself outside of your professional work experience. Since these employers may never actually meet you face to face, it's okay to describe a bit more about yourself than you would on your resume. Perhaps you might like to briefly describe your family and interests. Otherwise, stick to the type of information that you would normally include on a resume cover letter. Do you speak multiple languages? List them here. Your "About Me" page is also a great place to explain what type of virtual work you are looking for and when you are available to work.
-- Work Experience. This is where you will want to describe your work history. (Do NOT list addresses and phone or other contact details for your employers - that is what your resume is for. Instead, provide LINKS to employer websites!). Try to provide more detail about specific projects that you worked on including the results of your efforts.
-- Education. Do not just list your schools! Provide information about your favorite subjects, training programs you completed, certifications you have obtained, and any other relevant coursework. You might also provide information about seminars or workshops that you have attended, awards and honors you have received and professional organizations that you are a member of.
-- Projects. If you have completed virtual assistant work before then this is a great place to describe it. Alternatively, you might title this page "Portfolio" if you have work that can be displayed or linked to (such as art work, writing and blog posts, etc).
-- Skills. (Or "Services") This is where you will want to list the virtual services you can perform and the skills that you have to perform the work successfully.
-- Technology. (Or "Home Office") Here you will want to fully list all of the equipment that you have access to in your home office. Detail the specifics about your hardware and software, online services, resources and reference materials and your general home office arraignment. Employers will be specifically looking for your home computer information and your access to necessary virtual office tools including Business Voicemail and Online Fax .
-- References or Testimonials. Do NOT simply list your references and definitely do NOT publish your reference phone numbers and contact data! (Again, that is what your resume is for). Instead you should publish letters of recommendation that you have received. You can also get your references to provide brief statements about your work so that you can publish a list of testimonials.
How To Use Your Resume To Get Jobs
Once you have completed your website and your VOT Resume Profile you will want to get the word out to hiring employers! Besides adding links to your social networks (such as Facebook and LinkedIn) you should also share the links with the search engines and other websites, forums or message boards that you visit and other career job boards.
You will also be able to monitor who visits your website. This will be useful in determining if you need to make changes or improve your content so that you will get more employer hits. You will be able to see:
- The number of times your web pages have been viewed
- How long visitors stay on your site
- Which search engines your visitors use to find you
- Which areas of the world your visitors come from
- Which page your visitors visit last before leaving your site
Now You Are A True Professional!
Virtual Assistants simply MUST prove to potential employers that they are savvy enough to work at home via the phone and the Internet so your website is a great opportunity to show off! A professional website will give employers the piece of mind that you are a true professional. But perhaps the biggest bonus you will receive from your website is the new marketing, revenue and business opportunities that will come your way.
You can easily add a blog to your website. You can accept online payments for your services. You can create polls and guestbooks. You can include a "Contact Me" form. You can add ad links to your website to make additional money! ... and much more!!
