FOR JOB SEEKERS your VOT Resume Profile is the MOST IMPORTANT factor in determining if you will land a virtual assistant project. If your Resume Profile is weak, incomplete or filled with typos, chances are you will not hear from potential employers. Out of the thousands of resumes posted in our directory, less than 30 percent contain all the necessary details. Common mistakes include:
- Not enough details on previous work history - Typos and other mistakes - Unprofessional content - No information on work accomplishments - Is too short (less than 400 words) - Does not provide information about home office experience - Does not contain information about home office equipment, tools and hardware/software
Uploading a professional and well written resume to VOT is the easiest and fastest way to get relevant job recommendations and offers from potential employers. Think of it as your virtual "business card" to the world. It is often the only thing a hiring manager will see before deciding to make contact with you about a job. HOW YOUR RESUME IS RANKED
Your VOT Resume is ranked based on Employer Views, Content and Keywords, and how often you login and use the VOT website. Rankings are updated every Sunday evening.
Employer Views This is one of the most important factors used to rank your resume in our system. The more your resume is viewed, the higher the ranking will be. Most virtual assistants include their Resume Profile link in their email signature, on Internet forums and message boards, on their websites and blogs, on their hardcopy and online resumes, on their business cards, and on social network sites such as Linkedin and Facebook.
Your VOT Resume Profile link is connected to your VOT username and looks like this:
http://www.virtualassistantjobs.com/YOURusername (replace "YOURusername" with your VOT username). You can find this information easily by Logging On to VOT and then selecting MY ACCOUNT.
Sharing your VOT Profile link online will assure that your resume receives a higher ranking and therefore becomes more visible to hiring employers. If you have posted your ONLINE RESUME on career job boards, be sure to include a link to your VOT Resume Profile.
Activity You must login and use the VOT website. The more active you are on our system, the higher your profile will rank. You should login at least once per week to check for new projects and messages from employers. Many of our highest ranking virtual assistants login daily. You might consider making VOT your homepage or add it to your bookmarks bar as a way to remind yourself to login.
Content Your resume should be accomplishment based and focused on your area of expertise. A basic, uninspired resume that simply lists your previous job duties will NOT work. Since you will not get the benefit of a face to face meeting with the hiring employer, your resume MUST do all the talking by highlighting your career accomplishments .
Employers need to know that you can meet their basic requirements before they invest time in your application package. For this reason, they often search our system using general keywords to location specific content. This might include searching for content associated with a degree or certification program, job functions or specific equipment and tools required to work from home.
Make sure that your VOT Resume Profile contains information about all of the following:
- Your home office Computer, Operating System and MS Office Professional version - Your high Speed Internet Access. (DSL or Cable Modem only). - Describe your Landline and Telephone equipment (should have a Corded Analog Base Phone and a Telephone Headset with Adjustable Volume ) - Give details on your office equipment such as your access to copiers, printers and Paper Shredders - Provide your Virtual Fax Number and service that you use. - You must have website. Build your own website in minutes! - Your credit score (if it is above 600) Get free Credit Score here
Keywords Be sure to use strong keywords in your resume. Keywords may be slang specific to your industry, names of software or hardware programs or verbs that describe your skills. Many employers search for specific items in your resume such as experience with "Virtual Fax or the Virtual Assistant reference book
But remember, padding your resume with lists of useless words will not help your ranking. VOTs résumé search technology will catch and flag arbitrarily inserted keywords, lowering the résumé's ranking and sending the offending candidate's application to the recycle bin. For this reason, job seekers should take special care and only chose those keywords that represent particular education, background experiences and skills.
