HOT VIRTUAL JOB: SOCIAL NETWORKING ASSISTANTS


Recent reports have offered some hope for the US Employment Market: unemployment rates are declining nationwide. Helping to drive the trend is the rapid growth of Social Media
which has led to a virtual job boom for Social Networkers.

According to our recent survey of hiring employers and job seeking virtual assistants, virtual Social and Web Networking projects outpaced almost all other work at home job fields (with the exception of Home Based Medical Transcription and Mobile/Web Programming).

As more companies are realizing the importance of leveraging the marketing power of social media, both large and small employers are creating hundreds of new in-house and at-home positions dedicated exclusively to the platform including Online Community Managers, Forum and Feed Moderators, Online Game Moderators, Facebook and Twitter Marketing Assistants, Chat and Discussion leads, Social Media Researchers/Directors, Blog Managers and many others. These jobs were nonexistent just a few years ago but are now quickly moving to the forefront of the virtual workforce. According to our survey, there has been a nearly 200% increase in virtual social media job postings at VirtualOfficeTemps.com in the last 18 months. Another indication are our keyword search metrics. Employers are searching our Virtual Assistant Directory for workers who have experience with "Facebook", "Twitter", "forums", "gaming", "social networking" and "social media".




What is Social Media and Social Networking?

These terms are actually difficult to define. So, to keep it simple, think of Social Networking as the act of engaging, converging and collaborating with others, and Social Media as the platforms where the communication occurs. The most obvious are Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn but even location based services like Foursquare qualify. Other social media outlets include older technologies such as blogs, forums, message boards and live chats.

Also driving the trend are MMORPGs (Massively multiplayer online role-playing games). These are online role-playing video games in which a very large number of players interact with one another within a virtual game world. MMORPGs usually have paid Game Moderators or Game Masters (frequently abbreviated to GM), who supervise, manage and generate social interaction within the virtual world. Some GMs may have additional access to features and information related to the game that are not available to other players and roles (such as customer service tools that allows them to help gamers with their accounts).




Experience Required For Social Networking Jobs and Projects

While requirements vary from job to job, the common denominator is strong knowledge of the social networks including Facebook and Twitter. Virtual workers must have fully equipped home offices so that they can communicate freely and across many platforms. Another important attribute is the desire to help others, collaborate in a virtual environment and knowledge of protocols and industry terms (for instance: hashtags, Tweets, tagging, etc). You'll need to have some knowledge of the platform but there are a variety of Social Media Resources available to help you get up to speed.

Since the vast majority of virtual social networking jobs involve at least some aspects of marketing, employers tend to prefer virtual assistants who are adept at creating engaging, lively and frequent posts, replies and updates.
