IF YOU THINK THAT YOUR TIRED OLD TRADITIONAL RESUME
IS GOING TO HELP YOU LAND A VIRTUAL ASSISTANT JOB - THINK AGAIN!
Competition is fierce out there for virtual assistant jobs. For every applicant with ten years of administrative experience, there are THOUSANDS of others with twenty or even thirty years of experience. So how do you make yourself stand out from the crowd? It's actually very easy - you simply need a fully equipped home office and a professional marketing package.
Now pay attention - we are NOT talking about a traditional resume document with a cover letter and salary history. Can you say... BORING?? Instead, we suggest that you spice it up, have fun, and be unique while also highlighting your skills and experiences.
Your Resume The first thing you will need is a listing in our VIRTUAL ASSISTANT DIRECTORY. It's free and will expose your profile to hundreds of hiring employers and project managers who are looking for home based virtual assistants. But before you simply submit a standard resume, you should ask yourself if you have highlighted your career ACCOMPLISHMENTS - or have you simply listed your previous job duties? A chronological resume that runs down a list of past job duties will NOT win you a virtual assistant job. Your resume must focus on real world facts and figures, essentially providing proof that you can actually live up to your claims.

For example, A traditional chronological resume might look like this:
Administrative Assistant Typed documents. Performed data entry. Filed. Answered telephones. Prepared reports and other files.
blah, blah, blah... the hiring manager will not be interested.
On the other hand, an ACCOMPLISHMENT driven resume looks like this:
Administrative Assistant
Created an electronic filing system that is still used by the company today that allowed documents to be shared across a variety of platforms. Stepped outside assigned tasks to design new report formats that saved the company nearly $4,000 in outside design fees. Implemented a research project that studied peak telephone times which eventually led to hiring a part time assistance and overall better service to our customers. Winner of the 2009 Employee Of The Year Award.

Your Presentation Once you have created an accomplishment driven resume you will need to think about how to best present your document. Most virtual assistants should keep their resume to just one page. There should be a very clear statement of purpose (also known as an 'objective' or 'career goal'). Refrain from using wordy, catch-all phrases such as "to obtain a career position where I can utilize my clerical experience." BLAH!! Employers have heard it a thousand times before so don't do it. Instead be concise and direct: "virtual assistant work in the medical billing field" or "Virtual Office Professional Specializing In Accounting". Try to offer a focus when possible (i.e. "accounting" or "medical billing" instead of simply "administration"). This may mean that you'll need to tailor each resume towards each unique job that you are applying for - but if you really want to win the job and stand out above the others - you'll put in the extra time and effort involved. Employers and hiring managers will see the difference!
Your cover letter should match each unique resume and also refrain from using catch-all phrases and throw away statements.

Your Extras Home based virtual assistants will need more than a simple resume and cover letter to get them hired. We strongly suggest that you take the time to obtain the following:
Virtual Assistant Business Cards These simple cards should contain your contact information, your eFax Number , your Facebook and/or Twitter page, your speciality (for instance "Professional Medical Biller"), and a link to your online resume. (Many successful virtual assistance choose to offer a link to their VOT listing in our directory).

Virtual Assistant Brochure Another excellent marketing tool is a resume brochure. This is especially helpful to those virtual assistants with previous experience or for those trying to highlight specific services that they are capable of performing. Brochures are also helpful for being re-hired with the same employer for future project work. Simply give them your brochure and business card after you complete your assignment and chances are they will contact you directly the next time they need help.
